Revised Common Lectionary Readings

Jeremiah 18:1-11
Until it is fired in the kiln, the potter takes a lump of clay, works it on the wheel, and forms it into a desired shape. From time to time, the potter’s hands slip, the vessel is distorted, but the potter simply begins again, remaking the vessel. The allegory is not a perfect one, since the prophet indicates it is something about the clay that has spoiled the vessel God intends. The sin of the people requires God to reform the vessel. But, the other texts to follow suggest something slightly different. The grace is in the use that God can make of spoiled clay. God uses who we are to form what God wishes.

Our Prayer This WeekOur Prayer for the week of August 29-Sept 4, 2010
Almighty God, we have heard your call.  Your call to us has been as weak as a word, a sigh, a whisper, or a breath of air.  The world seems as tall and as immovable as a mountain.  Yet the whisper of words and the sigh of air can move mountains, provoking deep seismic shifts in mind-sets and toppling empires.

We come today seeking to live a fuller life in your kingdom.  The rule of your kingdom is found in patience and forgiveness, which, instead of exacting payment for an offense, releases and lets go.  We want to release our anger and retribution of one another and those in the past who have hurt us and burdened us with a rigid way of living.

Your kingdom is a way of living, not in eternity, but a way of living here and now, living out of our experience of your presence.  Forgive us for judging the successful life as mastering and programming time, calculating the future, containing and managing risk.  We pray for the honesty to live life with your definition of living.

Your kingdom, Merciful God, is where the least and the undesirable are most favored while the best and the powerful are put on the defensive.  The inverted power of your kingdom is found whenever the lost one is preferred over the ninety-nine, whenever one loves one’s enemies.  We confess that we have fended off our enemies and keep the circle of protectors close and tightly drawn.  We pray for a love that, though seemingly powerless, is the power that heals and fosters peace and offers a place for everyone.

Our prayers are offered up in faith, hopefully with patience, believing you will guide us, heal us, and redeem us.  In the name of the Living Christ we pray.  Amen.

Highlights

Dr. Anil Henry to speak at CLCC

Dr. Anil Henry, director of our Disciples’ Christian Hospital in Mungeli, India, will be at Cherry Log for lunch on Wednesday, September 8, from 11:30-1:00.  We are all invited to hear him, but need to make reservations by calling the church office or signing a sheet on the Outreach bulletin board near the Fellowship Hall.

Dr. Henry is a Global Ministries partner.  After completing his education and while he was a surgeon at Baptist Hospital in Nashville, Dr.  Henry asked Global Ministries for a  challenge.  He sent his Dad, an Indian doctor, to check out the hospital in Mungeli, and was told, “You want a challenge; you’ve got it.”

This hospital was founded by the Disciples in the late 1800’s, and by the mid 1900’s was a leading provider of treatment for eye problems.  “Eye camps” were established throughout that region.  However, from 1955 until 2000 the hospital suffered from lack of leadership and funding and no longer resembled the hospital of its “glory days.”  Dr. Henry and his family accepted the challenge.

Under Dr. Henry’s leadership, the hospital now has new buildings, new equipment and a vision that is bringing vibrancy back to the hospital.  Two groups of Disciples from Georgia recently visited the hospital.  They were told, “Don’t send money; send people.  Come and see.”  While we may not be able to go to India, Dr. Henry’s visit on September 8 will be our opportunity to “Come and See.”
