Revised Common Lectionary Readings

Isaiah 40:21-31
This passage from Isaiah has been popularized over the past twenty five years or so by the academy award winning movie Chariots of Fire, a wonderful recounting of the triumphant athletic prowess of Eric Liddell and Sir Harold Abrahams at the turn of the twentieth century. As Olympic Champions for the United Kingdom in track and field their medal winning performances stirred the imagination of an entire generation of athletes. Liddell, the son of Christian missionaries serving in China, and Abrahams of Jewish ancestry, were driven by different reasons in their quest for excellence.

Our PrayerOur Prayer for the week of January 29 - February 4, 2011

Eternal God, we give thank to you with our hearts, souls, minds, and bodies for the blessings of life that we have been given.  You are more than gracious and generous with us.  If we could even give back to you all you have given us, even that would not suffice to compensate for the blessedness we feel in seeing and experiencing this life.

We long for situations and answers to be clearer in our lives. We feel frustrated
when there seem to be two or more possible right answers. We would rather check "true" or "false".   Yet your Spirit in Christ promises to be present with us as we struggle together for faithful answers in this time of human history.  Instead of seeing our lives as beautiful leather-bound books, help us to be loose-leaf notebooks that can be added to, subtracted from, and edited.  Insert pages to our lives that reflect your reconciliation, your healing spirit, and your way of life.

Silence our troubled spirits, we pray.   Erase our internal calendars that promote excessive activity and restlessness.  Gently rub salve on hearts that are wounded and bruised, fearful and dark.  In this season of Light, may we see the Light of Christ, the Light of Love, the Light of Grace, and the Light of Peace.

Come, Lord Jesus!

OUTREACH INTO OUR COMMUNITY

Gilmer County Food Pantry Newsletter
Judy Farmer, one of our members, is Executive Director of the Glimer Community Food Pantry.  Also, Gil Reed and Katie Griffin are full-time volunteers and work tirelessly to feed the families, adults and children, of Gilmer County.  Judy Farmer writes in the Winter newsletter, "In 2008 we fed 4,567 families versus 6,171 in 2011 - an increase of 35 percent.  The number of adults and children we served in 2008 was 12,336 versus 24,966 in 2011 - a huge increase of over 100 percent.  In 2011 we also initiated two new services.  Our Sack Pack for Kids Program, which feed 200 children each weekend, and we began delivering food to the residents of Brooks Hill Apartments.  We set a record in November of 2011 by feeding 728 families in one month, providing food for  1,620 adults and 1,692 children.  If the numbers continue at that level, we will have a rough road ahead.  At times it is a daunting task, but through prayer and thanks to you, our faithful donors, we will forge ahead.  Our battle to fight hunger in Gilmer County Continues."

This Newsletter also spotlighted Gil Reed, one of the volunteers at the Gilmer Food Pantry.  Every Monday and Wednesday morning around 6:00 a.m. you will find Gil hard at work in the Gilmer County Food Pantry and he will be there until the Pantry closes for the day.

If you would like to donate or volunteer for the Gilmer Food Pantry, please talk with Gil Reed, Judy Farmer, or Katie Griffin.  If you don't know who the are, call the church office and Malinda will give you their information.

Highlights

Covenant Groups to Begin Next Month

Small Group Ministry will offer several small groups beginning next month that will give you the opportunity to deepen your spiritual life as you deepen your relationships with others in the church. These will be “covenant groups” which emphasize a commitment to daily Scripture reading and prayer, attendance at weekly meetings, and caring and sharing with the other members of the group.  Many have asked for a small group experience like the triad experience.  Although each of these covenant groups can accept six to eight members plus two leaders, a key purpose of the covenant group is to facilitate the development of caring and bonding that occurred with the triad groups.

The groups will start during Lent, which is traditionally a period of spiritual preparation for Easter.  Two different types of groups will be offered.  The first is Disciple Bible I.  This is a structured program for individual and group study that is designed to cover 80% of the Bible in 34 weeks.  Since the concept of covenant groups may be new to many in the church, our groups will initially commit to 8 weeks in order to develop this unique type of group experience.  Those who want to continue with the entire 34-week program may choose do so after the introductory 8-week session is completed.

For this group you will need a Bible and Disciple I Study Manual.  The manual, which can be used for the entire 34-week program, costs $36.75.  Financial help is available to those who need it in order to purchase the book.

Following is a list of the leaders and times for Disciple Bible I groups:

Time: Dates: Co-leaders:

Sat. 10:00 a.m.-noon 2/25-4/14 Carl Hendrickson and Wanda Hitt

Mon. 5:30-7:30 p.m. 2/27-4/16 Bill Groce and Anne Williamson

Wed. 3:00 -5:00 p.m. 2/29-4/18 Sheryl and Max Holstein

Thurs. 10:00 a.m.-noon 2/23-4/12 Peggy Cleveland and Bobbie Cherry

The second type of group will emphasize the contemplative approach to prayer and Scripture reading.  Christian contemplation is the practice of interior silence that leads to a deep “resting in God.”  Centering Prayer is one of the contemporary forms of this ancient Christian tradition.  This group will give you a thorough introduction to the contemplative practices of Centering Prayer and Lectio Divina, a method of “praying with Scripture.”

For this group you will need a Bible and the book Forty Days to a Closer Walk with God: The Practice of Centering Prayer by J. David Muyskens, which will guide you in a daily practice of contemplative prayer.  Cost of the book is $10.87.  The group will meet once a week for 7 weeks for prayer and sharing.  Those who wish to continue to share contemplative prayer with others may then choose to join a Centering Prayer group at CLCC.

Time: Dates: Co-leaders

Sun. 12:45-2:15 p.m. 2/19-4/1 Cindy Avens and Richard Zelley

You may register for a Disciple Bible I group or the Contemplative Prayer group clicking on this link http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/BC378Y6 - or by calling the church office at 706-632-1048.  Registration will end Feb. 13 so that books can be ordered before the groups begin.
